St. Bernards HospiceBACKGROUND INFORMATIONSt. Bernard's Hospice was established in 1991 in response to the East London community emphasizing the need for specialised care for terminally ill patients. The service offers specialized palliative medical and nursing care, as well as psycho-social support. It interlinks with other similar community projects, support groups and the main health sector. At the time of establishing St Bernard's Hospice, no other service of this nature existed. In 1995, and Integrated Community Home Care (ICHC) Program was introduced to establish a professional / economic model of care. It is replicated across South Africa to assist in the HIV/AIDS crisis. This model uses all available resources to care holistically for patients and utilizes the inter-disciplinary team, including care workers and volunteers who have been trained in the model. During 2003, St Bernard's Hospice introduced support group and day care services, to meet patient needs for supervision and skills education, and to use it as a tool for community HIV/AIDS awareness. Currently, seven (7) support group/day care centers are operating with community interaction. Home Based Care Services offer 24 hours availability by a trained inter-disciplinary team, which extends support into the bereavement period and links into social intervention practices for orphan care. A 6 Bed Hospice In-Patient Unit provides pain and symptom control, respite and specialist medical / nursing care. The Hospice Team, trained and skilled in Palliative Care, includes Doctors, Professional Nurses, Care Workers, Social Workers, a Community Developer, volunteers, counselors, and clergy. St Bernard's Hospice provides care regardless of the recipient's religion, culture, or ability to pay for services and aims to assist those for whom there are few resources.
Services are available in the Buffalo City and Amatole District Municipalities. The Eastern Cape and Border region, including East London, is regarded as one of the least economically viable areas of the country, with sprawling townships where indescribable poverty exists. The area is prioritized for health and social development. HIV/AIDS and TB are rife and due to poor nutrition/poverty, HIV/AIDS patients die quickly from opportunistic infections and hunger. Demographics of the Area :
Six (6) St Bernard's Hospice Professional Nurses have done the formal Palliative Care course, which is recognized by the SA Nursing Council.

AIDS ORPHANSThe ChallengeSouth Africa is in the midst of a daunting and escalating orphan pandemic. Recent state figures estimate that there are close to 3,400,000 orphans, mainly due to AIDS, in the country. With between 600 and 1000 AIDS deaths a day, mostly of parent aged women, this figure grows daily. Without effective intervention more than a million orphans will be added over the next decade.Presently there are about 360,000 orphans in the Eastern Cape at least three quarters of whom are living in poverty and hunger. Many are sickly and many thousands themselves have AIDS and are at very high risk of, or currently suffering from, neglect and emotional, physical and/or sexual violence. AIDS orphans are either living
